अध्याय तिसरा:
सूत म्हणाले ,”सज्जनहो ! पूर्वी इक्ष्वाकु वंशी मित्रासह राजा चक्रवर्ती सम्राट होऊन गेला . मृगयेसाठी गेला असताना त्याने एका राक्षसाला मारले .म्हणून सूडाने पेटलेल्या त्याच्या( राक्षसाचाया )भावाने मनुष्य रूपात राजाची भेंट घेतली व त्याला आपले पाककला कौशल्य दाखवून त्याच्या राजवाडयात आचारी म्हनून नोकरी मिळवली .पुढे वसिष्ठ ऋषी राजाच्या भेटीला आले असताना त्याने भज्यामध्ये नरमांस शिज़वून भोजनास वाढ़ले .ही गोष्ट अंतरज्ञानी वशिष्टाना समजली त्यांनी संतापाने राजाला ‘तू निर्जन वनांतील राक्षस होऊन नरमांस खाशील असा शाप दिला .राजाने चौकशी साठी आचार्याला बोलावले ,परंतु तो तेथून पळाला होता .तेव्हा ऋशीनी विनाकारण शाप दिला म्हणून संतापलेल्या राजाने त्यांना प्रतिशाप देण्यासाठी हातात पाणी घेतले,पण पट्टराणी मदयंती त्याला परावृत्त केले .राजाने ते पाणी आपल्याच पायावर टाकले.त्यामुळे त्याचे पाय काळे पड़ून त्याला क़ल्माषपाद नाव पडले.सत्य प्रकार कळताच ऋषीनी त्याला तू बारा वर्षानी राक्षस योनीतून मुक्त होशील ,असा उशाप दिला . ऋषी शापाने राक्षस झालेला कल्माषपाद भुकेने कासाविस होऊन भटकत असताना त्याने एका ब्राम्हणास ख़ाऊन टाकले म्हणून त्याच्या पत्नीने (ब्राम्हणीने)त्याला ,तू शाप मुक्त होऊन घरी जाशील तेव्हा पत्नीशी रममाण होशील त्या वेळी मरण पावशील .असा शाप दिला .त्या नंतर ती सती गेली .शापमुक्त झालेला कल्माषपाद घरी परतला तेव्हा त्याने ही गोष्ट आपल्या स्रियांना सांगीतली.त्यामूळे त्यांना खूप दुःख झाले .
या सर्व घटनांनी बेचैन झालेला राजाने गृहत्याग करुन वनगमन केले .पुढे ग़ौतमांची भेंट झाल्यावर त्यांना स्वत:चे दुःख सांगून यातून सुटका होण्यासाठी काही मार्गदर्शन करावे .अशी विनती केली तेव्हा गौतम ऋषिनीं त्याला श्री क्षेत्र गोकर्ण महाबळेश्वरची पावन कथा सांगीतली .त्या क्षेत्राचे माहात्म्य विशद करताना एक अत्यंत पापीणी स्री गोकर्ण क्षेत्री कशी आली ,तिला शिवरात्रीस उपोषण ,जागरण व पूजन क़से घड़ले आणि त्याच्या पुण्यप्रभावाने ती यमलोकी कशी गेली त्या विषयीची समग्र हकिगत सांगितली गौतमांच्या मार्गदर्शनानुसार राजा कलमाषपाद श्री क्षेत्र गोकर्णास गेला व तेथे शिव -आराधनेस रममाण होऊन ब्रम्हहत्तेच्या पातकातून मुक्त झाला व अंती शिवलोकी गेला.
